Up for sale, a 1961 Harmony H165 Baxendale X-braced conversion in excellent condition, complete with a hardshell case. One of Harmony's most enduring and popular USA-made vintage acoustic models, the H165 is akin to Gibson's LG-0 in many respects with solid mahogany construction. Athens, Georgia-based Scott Baxendale’s conversion process is comprehensive, including removing the original ladder bracing and replacing it with hand-scalloped X bracing, fretboard planing and a full refret, a new rosewood bridge, carved bone saddle and nut, and a set of Grover Sta-Tite tuning machines.

An absolute cannon in terms of projection, the sound is powerful and detailed, with a far crisper and more articulate treble register than with the original bracing pattern. Wound strings have muscle and headroom, with a smooth growl when digging in hard with a flatpick, while the trebles are punchy and pronounced. The instrument has a particularly broad dynamic range and a complex midrange, responsive to pick attack and delivering both sweet, dulcet tones and broad, cutting power. The guitar is also ideally voiced for fingerpicking, with a balance and retention of treble detail when played with the pads of the fingers. This Harmony H165 weighs 3lbs 11oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
