1957-national-avalon-1134-vintage-electric-guitar-w-case-town-country
1957 National Avalon 1134 Vintage Electric Guitar w/ Case, Town & Country
Up for sale, a 1957 National Avalon model 1134 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Offered by the Chicago-based Valco company under their flagship brand National, the Avalon was part of a lineup also including the Town & Country and Glenwood. Clearly chasing the emerging Les Paul solidbody market, the Avalon has simple appointments with a spruce top and mahogany body and neck, outfitted with two of Valco's humbucker-sized single coils with large ceramic magnets. The tone has plenty of richness and warmth, and the top end is sweet and snappy, with a crisp attack and distinctive midrange character that few other pickups possess. There's a unique Pickup Blend knob on the cutaway (in lieu of a pickup selector toggle), with about half the rotation of a normal pot, providing a smooth gradient between the two single coils. Featherweight at 7lbs 1oz, this National has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The neck has a deep and substantial V profile carve, yet with very full shoulders, feeling akin to a U shape but with the subtle point of the V central to the carve, measuring .960" deep at the 1st fret and 1.045" at the 12th. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original slender frets, leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime and playing cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale. The original bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the bound headstock retains the original raised National badge and Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners with oversized white tulip buttons. The X-prefix serial number plate dates to 1957.

All of the electronics work as they should, with the original paper-in-oil tone cap and untouched solder joints on the Stackpole pots which date to 1956. Hardware includes the original nickel trapeze tailpiece and floating Brazilian rosewood bridge which has room for adjustment on both thumbwheels. The bolt-on neck is ideally angled for optimal pickup height, as the tall cream pickup rings keep the height of the single coils otherwise fixed. A trio of knobs and the original floating single-ply pickguard round out the plastics, and the guard shows some requisite pick scuffing through the silkscreened pinstriping.

The nitro lacquer finish is 100% original, and the spruce top is framed by multi-ply binding which shows a very small amount of shrinkage at the treble-side waist. There are a few spots of light wear through the gloss on the bass side of the top, some finish chipping along the rounded back body edge, and some shallow marks and light palm wear mostly central to the V neck profile carve.

A modern tweed hardshell case is included.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/4437/4714/files/medium_0051fe74-1db1-46c5-bff7-50a859ad66d9.jpg?v=1751504380
https://mmguitarbar.com/products/1957-national-avalon-1134-vintage-electric-guitar-w-case-town-country
