Magnasync was a Burbank, CA-based company that produced film editing equipment during the Golden Age of cinema. They also produced proprietary audio equipment to accompany their editing machines, including the URS, introduced in 1955 to allow editors a greater degree of access to the material in the cutting room without having to stop the editing process. Thanks to its tube-powered design and high quality tone, however, the URS has found a second life as a surprisingly capable and dynamic guitar amp.\n\nIt’s a decidedly simple and outwardly unassuming unit, with a pale green steel enclosure, On\/Off light, and Master Volume knob. The internals are quite straightforward, with one 4” Alnico speaker powered by an 6AQ5 power tube, RCA 6X4 rectifier, and 7025 (12AX7) in the preamp. There’s a significant bit of overlap between the URS and a Tweed era Fender Champ, with only a few modifications needed to convert the URS from its intended monitoring purpose into a remarkably adept little guitar amp. This unit has been modded as such, and can now take a 1\/4” input jack through the included adapter.\n\nThis amp’s tone is aggressive, abrasive, and gritty in all the right ways, with wild treble scream at louder volumes and a clean, well-articulated brightness while quiet. When really opened up, this little unit has a sound disproportionate to its small stature, fuzzing out and getting delightfully dirty.\n\nThis URS has light surface wear on the pale green steel housing, retaining the machined aluminum handle and a substantial ridged Volume knob.
